Do’s and Don’ts of Cleaning Timber Floors

Essential Tips for Timber Floor Care

The Australasian Timber Flooring Association (ATFA) has released a brochure outlining the do’s and don’ts of timber floors. Here are their and Floor’s suggestions for keeping your timber floors in top condition.

Do’s for Timber Floors

  • Sweep Regularly: Use an anti-static dry mop to sweep your floors.
  • Vacuum Safely: Use a vacuum with a soft brush head to avoid scratching.
  • Damp Mop: Follow the coatings manufacturer’s advice, usually on a fortnightly to monthly basis.
  • Use Recommended Products: Only use cleaning products recommended for timber floors.
  • Apply Floor Protection: Use protective pads on furniture and appliances.
  • Immediate Spill Clean-Up: Wipe up spills as soon as they occur.
  • Trim Pet Nails: Keep your pets’ nails trimmed to prevent scratches.
  • Lift Furniture: Lift, don’t drag, furniture when moving it.
  • Use Entry Rugs and Mats: Place rugs and mats at entrances to trap grit.
  • Move Rugs Regularly: Rotate internal rugs to avoid uneven wear.

Don’ts for Timber Floors

  • No Steam Mops: Never use steam mops; they can distort boards and damage finishes.
  • Avoid Wet Mops: Do not use wet mops as excess water can damage the wood.
  • No Rubber-Backed Rugs: Avoid using rubber-backed rugs, which can trap moisture.
  • No Hard-Head Vacuums: Do not use vacuums with hard heads or worn brushes.
  • No Abrasive Cleaners: Stay away from abrasive cleaning products and steel wool.
  • No Silicone Sprays: Do not use silicone sprays as they can damage the finish.
  • Avoid Certain Footwear: Do not wear stilettos, sports shoes, or work boots on timber floors.

Special Notes on Steam Mops

Steam mops, including dry steam versions, can cause significant damage to timber floors. They may distort boards, soften coatings, or alter the floor’s appearance. Always avoid using steam mops on timber floors.

Important Advice from ATFA

  • Damp Mopping: Ensure the mop is well wrung out and nearly dry to avoid leaving water residue.
  • Sand and Grit: These act like sandpaper, scratching the floor. Use entry mats and clean regularly.
  • Product Safety: Some commercial cleaners may irritate the skin or respiratory system. Use gloves and ensure proper ventilation.
  • Immediate Clean-Up: Clean up any spills, drips, drops, or sprays immediately to prevent damage.
  • Concentration of Cleaners: Overly concentrated cleaners can damage the coating, leaving dull marks. Use pH-neutral cleaners and test on an inconspicuous area first.
  • Stains: Some stains may penetrate the coating and cannot be removed.
